Fender Standard Precision Bass Review

Succeeding the Broadcaster that later Fender changed its name to Telecaster is the first bass guitar Leo Fender has ever build, the Precision Bass. This solid body bass guitar was brought to the market the following year, also garnering a massive attention like its six string counterpart. The P-bass was built to replace the double bass as the preferred low pitch string instrument to use through its revolutionary body design and better sound output same with an electric guitar. Moreover, it is much easier to transport, and made from road worthy robust parts to last.

The most popular and affordable model baring the Fender logo is the Fender Standard Precision Bass. Its design is inherited to the first ever P-bass dated back in 1951 and remained the top bass to pick for bassist to play in almost all genre of music.

Body and Neck: The body is made of alder in P-bass cut that looks smaller, because of the more even rounded base part of the body and contour in comparison to a J-bass that looks bigger, due to a slanting base part of the body and slightly uneven contour. Coating is polyester in different colors to select then protected by a 3-ply parchment.

Neck is C-shape made of maple bolt-on to the body using plate and screws. Fingerboard is wider comparing it again with a J-Bass, can either be made in maple, rosewood or newly introduced pau ferro fingerboard with 20 frets and inlay dots.

Pick-ups: Standard Split Single-Coil Precision Bass pick-up provides a classic meaty bass tone, as well hum canceling for a cleaner sound placed nearly at the center of the body controlled by a master volume and tone in Knurled flat-top.

Hardware: The strings are attached then kept in tune using 4-Saddle Standard Vintage-Style with Single Groove Saddles and Open-Gear Tuners. Both are finished in chrome.

Final Thoughts: Fender Standard Precision Bass together with the Standard Jazz Bass arguably are still the best alternative to an American made Fender basses. This recommendation is highlighted with the components it is assemble with, which is considered by many as reliable and more robust especially when being compared to bass guitars made by its sub-brand Squier that uses parts that are termed decent.

However, in respect to the bass instruments made by Squier, by not judging it on parts alone. It is also well capable of producing nice tones and the difference to the overall sound is arguably hardly noticeable even equip with less superior parts. So the choice between the two really depends on how far the budget can go and players preference on which bass best suites them.
