G&L Tribute Series Legacy Review

At the end of 1964, Leo Fender sold his beloved company Fender to CBS which includes an agreement that he wouldn’t be involve on any way in the musical instrument industry for 10 years after the sale. As time went by, soon came the non-involvement clause expired and no longer in effect, Leo immediately went back on what he does best, making guitars. He also had a short stint with Music Man as the president before teaming up once again with his old friend and long time associate George Fullerton founding G&L Musical Instruments.

Many says Leo Fender and George Fullerton save their best for last by refining the designs they already had created specifically on the Stratocaster and Telecaster their bread and butter, giving birth to G&L Tribute Series Legacy and the ASAT Classic.

Body and Neck: G&L Tribute Series Legacy is made in different tonewood classified by the finish. Swamp ash for translucent and burst finishes, basswood on solid finishes protected by a scratch plate. It has the ergonomic double cutaway body design same with a Fender making it comfortable to play.

Tonal characteristic of the body wood differs. Swamp ash is twangy, airy and sweet, while basswood is bright with a touch of softness and breathiness to the sound.

The C-shape neck with a satin finish is bolt-on using plate and screws. 22 frets medium jumbo maple or rosewood fingerboard, and it is flatter compared to a Fender for having 12” inches neck radius were as for Fender is rounded that has 91/2” or 71/4” inches radius.

Pick-ups: Sound of the G&L Tribute Series Legacy is produce by G&L CLF-100 Alnico V single-coils made in Fullerton, California. The single-coil pick-ups are placed on the neck, middle and bridge with improvements on the controls for having a master volume, a treble cut and bass cut that provides the classic Statocaster sound and a few other dynamic sound from playing with the controls.

Hardware: Another improvement is upon the trem-design replacing the bent steels vintage ones with block saddles, the Leo Fender-designed G&L Dual-Fulcrum with a whammy bar for vibrato effect adjusted by Allen to make it as tight or loose. Tuning keys are 18:1 ratio, sealed-back, keeping the guitar at just the right pitch.

Final Thoughts: G&L Tribute Series Legacy is a workhorse of a guitar with an affordable price comparable to a Fender Stratocaster model that any guitarist would also want. The overall craftsmanship is superb from body to headstock, then it is enhanced by Alnico V single-coils for better sound output and not to forget to mention the improvements made on the bridge design.
