Ibanez GIO GRX70QA Review

Guitars made by Ibanez goes way back and has a very interesting history to know. It really all started out in the lawsuit guitar era of the 60’s were this Japanese brand together with others is being sued by big name guitar makers like Gibson, Fender, Martin and Rickenbacker for making almost exact copies of their guitars.

After settlement by signing an agreement to stop building copies, Ibanez begun making guitars that has unique designs like the Iceman and Roadstar shedding off its past, giving now the company its own identity and credibility.

Then soon came the mid 1980’s, a period when Ibanez became a major player in the guitar world with the introduction of the JEM, RG series and others more in their guitar line, including entry level guitars for beginners, one mainly in particular is this model, the Ibanez GIO GRX70QA.

Body and Neck: This Superstrat guitar has a poplar body for tonewood with a quilted maple top veneer that comes in different finishes to choose from for aesthetics. Poplar is not a popular tonewood as ash, alder, and mahogany due to its low density, making it a much softer wood when compare to those just mentioned. The wood is lightweight, easy to work with and cheaper to mass produce guitars. Tonally it is also resonant to ding easily with enough sustain.

It has a bolt-on GRX maple neck with 22 jumbo frets New Zealand treated pine fingerboard complete with inlay dots as markers. Ibanez Superstrat guitar neck is slim tapering and has jumbo frets to facilitate light pressing on the fingerboard to achieve fast play.

Pick-ups: Pick-ups placed on the neck, middle and bridge are Ibanez passive ceramic Infinity pick-ups controlled by 5-way position blade, master volume and master tone. It is not as premium like the pick-ups used on the Ibanez JEM and RG series, yet the configuration is still in HSH with the same controls to produce the familiar Ibanez guitar type of sound.

Hardware: Holding the strings while keeping it in tune are chrome finished Ibanez Fat-6 tremolo bridge with whammy bar for vibrato effect and standard Ibanez tuners.

Final Thoughts: If you are looking for a Superstrat guitar to enjoy playing for just a few bucks or a beginner guitar to give on someone who shows a keen interest on playing the guitar. The Ibanez GIO GRX70QA is also a nice electric guitar to consider among the many other entry level guitars offered in the market.
