Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus Review

Looking back at its history, the Telecaster simple yet revolutionary design is the main foundation that propelled Fender in an era where archtops is the preferred guitar for players in the 1950’s. Then this first mass produced solid body electric guitar was followed by the Precision bass, and Stratocaster, that also gained commercial success equaling the Telecaster.

Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus is a mixture of classic ingredients and upgrades done to the body by making it more comfortable, to go with the pick-ups where the guitar received a major change. Greatly influencing the overall sound this Telecaster model can bring.

Body and Neck: The single cutaway body made of pine for this Telecaster has a belly cut just like on a Stratocaster that adds comfort during playing. It comes in two finishes to choose from, in honey burst and transparent charcoal protected by a 3-ply black plectrum guard.

Pine as tonewood gives a characteristic warm overdriven and crisp clean sound. It is a notable wood used by Leo Fender for his prototype, the Esquire which later become the Telecaster. In this day and age, aside from the Modern Player Telecaster models, Fender has used the wood for a Custom Shop Telecaster. As well as its sub-brand Squier for its Classic Vibe 50’s Telecaster.

The C-shape neck and 22 jumbo frets fingerboard is bolt-on to the body using plate and screws, carved out in one-piece maple coated in gloss polyester finish. Maple boards is appreciated for promoting note clarity and delivering a nice level of brightness to the sound.

Pick-ups: Modern Tele neck pick-up, single-coil Strat for the middle and Humbucker with a mini toggle coil split switch placed on the bridge, controlled by a 5-position blade, master volume and tone offers a variety of tones never heard before on a Telecaster.

Hardware: 6-Saddle Vintage-Style Strat Strings-Through-Body Hardtail bridge and Vintage-Style Tuning Machines are all in chrome, keeping the strings in tune.

Final thoughts: Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus together with Fender Modern Player Telecaster let guitar players look at a Telecaster in a different perspective with its new body design and pick-up configuration, which are capable of producing a totally different sound to apply on their music.

The guitars where never intended to replace the classic Telecaster. Purist may raise eyebrows and don’t agree with its development, but to others it is a welcome addition in the telecaster family.
